Fencing at the University of St. Thomas

The University of St. Thomas Fencing Club is one of the area's youngest collegiate fencing clubs, but also one with a history and connections with other area fencers and organizations.

In the 1970s, a young seminary student, Sinclair Oubre, would commute to Rice University to take fencing lessons from Arnold "Sonny" Mercado, now the President of the United States Fencing Coaches Association. The student, now Fr. Sinclair Oubre, founded the Spindletop Cavaliers fencing club in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area in the mid-1980s.

The current club is coached by Scott Brown, himself a product of the South Houston High School and Clear Lake fencing clubs. (see information right).

Junior Olympic Qualifiers

On the weekend of December 2-3, 2006, the University of St. Thomas Fencing Club hosted this season's Gulf Coast Division qualifying competitions for the 2007 Junior Olympics. The two-day tournament was held in the Jerabeck Center. The facility is no stranger to fencing, having been the site of the 1985 Olympic Festival competition, which saw such fencers as Peter Westbrook and Tim Glass competing.

Many of the competitions were quite large for JO qualifiers. The Junior Men's Epee competition, with 18 competitors, many of them quite accomplished, was an A1 event.
